The invention of the hundred million Dollar Post it note
We all know what Post it notes (sticky notes) are; the perfect little office accessory that makes a total mess of your office but serves as one of those useful office lines most of us can't live without. Most offices have post it notes, most office workers use post it notes but how exactly did these simple but effective small yellow memo notes come into our office lives???
Post it notes were accidentally discovered by a man named Spencer Silver who, at the time was working in the research laboratory at 3M (still the manufacturer of Post it notes today) back in 1970. Spencer was trying to find a strong adhesive which to a certain extend was working; however the adhesive he had created that day was even weaker than one already created by the team at 3M - the problem was the adhesive stuck fine but it could easily be peeled off it was almost the opposite of what he had set out to achieve WEAK instead of STRONG.
The product was not what was asked for and nobody knew what to do with the new (low tack) adhesive but Silver didn't discard the product but rather shelved it until a use was found.
Some four years on a 3M researcher by the name of Arthur Fry was taking time out from working by singing in the community choir, Arthur used simple paper strips as bookmarks for the days hymns, but the paper strips kept falling out of his hymn book..... At this point the idea was born if only in Fry's mind. He remembered the ultra low stick adhesive that Silver had created back in the 3M laboratories years ago and before long he was coating his paper book marks with the adhesive with kept the markers in place whilst being easily removed when needed - the adhesive on these 'first generation' Post it notes was so weak that when removed it didn't damage or leave a trace on the page. 3M were distributing Post it notes within a year - 10 years after Silver had created the original weak adhesive that no one thought was of any use. Today Post it notes, repositional notes and stick notes are one of the most popular office supplies products in the world.
